For my first two co-op rotations, I worked as a Mechanical Engineering Intern at Emery Oleochemicals in Cincinnati, OH. Emery Oleochemicals is a global manufacturer in high-performance, natural-based specialty chemicals> At Emery, I worked in the Reliability Department with four other supervisors. My primary role as a mechanical engineering co-op was the maintenance and management of all pressure safety valves and vessels at the Cincinnati plant. Totaling over 2500 valves and vessels, each safety valve had its own unique make and model and needed to be serviced on a preventative and corrective basis. Each safety valve had its own OSHA regulated maintenance period that needed to be maintained. My weekly tasks included letting the building operators know which valves needed servicing, assisting in the lock out of the pipe line leading to the valve, extraction of the valve and delivery to the maintenance vendor, locating suitable spare valves to replace the removed one and returning the valves to their original location in the promised time period. Aside from safety valve management, I was assigned to creating monthly Steam usage and Reclaim usage reports, visual inspections of various mechanical process components, work order assignments for reliability personnel, participating in various process flow improvements and general plant maintenance around the Cincinnati plant.
